Bridge Design Project
This bridge design project was for my additive manufacturing class. The task was to design and 3D print a bridge that would hold a 20lb weight on a 40x40mm platform. Our bridge was to be printed on a Prusa FDM printer and designed in Solidworks. Our grade was directly related to the weight and cost of the bridge. The lower the weight and cost the better the grade.
On the right was our first iteration utilizing a truss system for support. This was ultimately too heavy and would result in a costly bridge. Our final design as seen below is the most minimal design without sacrificing strength or functionality.
Final Design
To the right is a picture of the bridge with custom-designed print supports. As a part of the project, we were not allowed to use auto-generated print supports. We opted to double our bridge supports as print supports to maximize functionality and lower cost.
